A Christmas for Those Far From Home

Living more than 8,000 miles away from her family, Nicola found herself thinking about how many people spend Christmas far from home - or without family nearby at all. Around eight years ago, she and her partner started a new tradition: opening their home to anyone who might otherwise be alone at Christmas. Friends of friends, people they’d met along the way, and complete “waifs and strays” were all welcomed around the same table.

Strangers, Laughter, and New Friendships

What began as a simple invitation quickly became something more. Each year, a group of people - many of whom had never met before - gather together to share food, games, and laughter. Friendships are formed, stories are exchanged, and connections often carry on well into the new year. For Nicola, the tradition is a reminder that Christmas doesn’t have to be about where you’re from — but about opening your door, sharing what you have, and making space for others.
